Malcolm Tajiri – President, Employee Benefits Division
Malcolm Tajiri is the senior vice president and leader of Brown & Brown Pacific Insurance’s Hawaii offices. Recruited in 2006 to launch the employee benefits practice, Malcolm helped build the top firm in the islands.
Malcolm’s service responsibilities include strategic consultative design, carrier selection, claims resolution, eligibility and premium administration, and general overall maintenance of employee benefits programs. He is also responsible for plan design, alternate funding, self-insurance analysis, utilization reporting and analysis, health and wellness promotion, new plan implementation, and general benefits for large employers.
Prior to SPI, Malcolm spent 14 years at Aon Consulting/Alexander & Alexander and held the title of vice president; he was also an assistant vice president at Johnson & Higgins from 1990-1992 and a technical associate at Mercer Employee Benefits Consulting from 1986-1989. Malcolm earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Menlo College; he is a Hawaii Chapter Member of the National Association of Health Underwriters.
Dean Hirahara – President, Property & Casualty Division
Dean Hirahara is the senior vice president and leader of Brown & Brown Pacific Insurance’s Hawaii offices. Dean was initially hired by SPI in April of 1999 to launch the account development department.
Over the years, Dean with his highly talented production team, grew the large commercial accounts division in construction, municipality, transportation, Japan business, and hospitality. Additionally, Dean leads the Hawaii ocean marine insurance practice, which SPI initially expanded into through two key acquisitions.
Prior to SPI, he spent seven years at Aon Risk Services of Hawaii Inc. and held the title of vice president. Dean earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Alex Bogaard, President
Alex has a Master in Business Administration from the Universite de Paris-Dauphine. His professional designations include Certified Insurance Consultant (CIC), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), and Construction Risk & Insurance Specialist (CRIS).
He is a proud husband and father whose leisure activities include photography, endurance sports and adventure travel. He has volunteered through Seattle Rotary, Seattle Executive Association, the BEDC at the University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business and the Boy Scouts. He was an active member and past president of Seattle’s Entrepreneurs’ Organization, a member of NW Next Leaders Council and a 2008 winner of the Puget Sound Business Journal 40 Under 40 award.
Graham Gardner, Executive Vice President
Graham Gardner is the executive vice president and founding partner of Brown & Brown Pacific Insurance’s Pacific Northwest offices. Since opening the Seattle office in 2010, Graham, along with business partner Trond Bodal, was part of a leadership team that oversaw the rapid growth of SPI including the expansion of the practice to Tacoma, Washington and Newport, Oregon.
Prior to SPI, Graham served as the director for marine and national practice leader at Wells Fargo, and served on the Seattle office’s executive committee. During his time at Wells Fargo, the marine group enjoyed steady growth and sustained success. Previously, Graham started Sullivan & Curtis Insurance Brokers which was eventually sold to Wells Fargo. Graham started his career on the floor of Lloyd’s of London. In his 16 years in the London market, he focused on complex marine risks and worked for several well-known insurance brokerage companies, including C.E. Heath and Nicholson Chamberlain Coles, moving up from broker to director.
Graham enjoyed a private education in the United Kingdom. He served on the board of the Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial and, most recently, has served as vice president for the special education unit at the University of Washington.
Matthew C. Lund, Senior Vice President
Matt Lund has over 15 years of experience in the employee benefits field, specializing in self-funded health and welfare plans, benefit design and management, individual disability income (IDI) combo’s and long-term care (LTC) for large corporate clients. As Practice Leader for the Employee Benefits Department, Matt built the Pacific Northwest employee benefits practices and oversees the operations and direction of the team.
Prior to joining Brown & Brown Pacific Insurance, Matt began his career at a national insurance carrier serving the Southwest and was then an executive for two large local brokerage firms in Seattle, WA.
Matt is a graduate of the University of Portland and played professional soccer in Sweden prior to entering the insurance industry. Active in the local community, Matt has been a member of the Emerald City Rotary, Seattle Works and Together We Play.
